So you are contemplating selling your current home. The 3 top DYI things you should do before listing will help you sell your home faster. Once you have interviewed and chosen your desired Realtor®, take the time to get their advice on any specific upgrades or repairs needed. In the meantime, here are some steps to take to prepare.
Declutter & Organize
- This means both inside and outside. Concentrate on pantries, closets and the garage as these are often selling point features to potential buyers. Organize cabinets and clear off and clean countertops. Remember this Golden Rule – Less is More. Potential buyers are enabled to envision living in the home easier when there is less clutter. This also applies if you have lots of personal pictures and wall decor. Pack them away creating a sense of larger space and giving the potential buyer the opportunity to see themselves in the space.
Clean & Dust
- Clean countertops and put away all small appliances and make them sparkle. Clean all windows and doors, handles and light switch plates. Dust and wipe down all ceiling fans, mantles, blinds and baseboards.
Paint & Replace
- Paint all trim and door frames – patch any cracks that you may have notices when cleaning before painting. Check all light bulbs, batteries in fire detectors and replace all that are burned out. This applies inside and outside of your home. As we always say, we want to show buyers your home in it’s best light so this may seem a little thing but it makes a big difference in how your home is viewed.
Should you, during your cleaning discover some repairs – check with your Realtor® first. Sometimes minor repairs need not to be done. Larger repairs that concern things such as plumbing, gas, electrical, or roofing for example should be done by professionals for both safety reasons and so that it is done correctly the first time. Most professional real estate agents, like we do, has a list of trusted vendors to help if needed.
