Top Florida Realtors® Priorities
Affordable Housing and Rent Control
The top priorities for the real estate industry are affordable housing and rent control. The 2023 Florida Legislature convenes on March 7 and will be addressing these, among other issues. The proposed ordinances could have long-lasting and harmful effects on local economies writes Tom Butler in his recent article, “Affordable Housing, Rent Control Top Florida Realtors®” (Florida Realtor Magazine, March 2023). He also notes that “Florida is one of several states that recognize the dangers these policies promote and has enacted strict legal requirements to prevent them.”
Priorities
The Florida Realtors® association supports new affordable housing measures and is working to expand the Hometown Heroes Housing program which helps heroes buy homes in communities they serve. Some of the other points that the association is focusing on are:
- “Implementing Property insurance reforms enacted last year and working with lawmakers to attract insurance capital back into the state.
- Funding for programs that result in improved water quality.
- Identifying ways to eliminate the tax on commercial leases, known as the Business Rent Tax.
- Increasing transparency of official condominium records.
- Ensuring the rights of private property owners as they relate to short term rentals.” (Read more details on the proposed Housing Bill)
We Don’t Just Buy and Sell Houses
These and many other priorities are what your Florida Realtors® work on behind the scenes. Mike McGraw, 2023 President of Florida Realtors® says, “It’s going to take a lot of hard work to find success on our priorities and we will need the voices of our 238,000 members to help push our measures forward…I’ve seen what their combined voice has accomplished before and I have no doubt that if they speak loudly in support of these priorities, we will achieve some significant legislative victories this year.”
Stay In the Know
Many people are unaware of some the programs available to them in the home buying and selling process. This is why it’s important to work with a licensed Realtor® when buying or selling your home.
